China has welcomed Iran’s proposal to expand bilateral cooperation in the fields of forestry, forest restoration and combating desertification, according to Iranian officials.
The proposal focuses on exchanging scientific and technical expertise, developing joint environmental projects, and benefiting from the experiences of both countries in managing forests and addressing land degradation.
Iran, which faces significant challenges from drought, desertification, water scarcity and the degradation of natural ecosystems, has increasingly emphasized international cooperation in environmental management and the restoration of vulnerable landscapes. China, meanwhile, has developed extensive programs aimed at combating desertification, restoring degraded land and expanding vegetation cover in arid and semi-arid regions.
The two sides are expected to explore opportunities for cooperation in areas including desertification control, afforestation, ecosystem restoration, sustainable forest management, combating sand and dust storms, and the exchange of scientific knowledge and technology.
Iranian officials have described cooperation with China as an opportunity to draw on China's experience in large-scale environmental restoration while also sharing Iran's own knowledge of managing ecosystems in dry and water-scarce environments.
The proposal comes amid growing international attention to desertification and land degradation, particularly in regions affected by prolonged drought, climate change and declining water resources. Greater cooperation between countries with extensive experience in arid-land management could contribute to the development of more sustainable approaches to restoring degraded landscapes.
Further details regarding specific projects, funding arrangements and implementation mechanisms are expected to emerge as Iranian and Chinese environmental authorities continue their discussions.
